Zombies, Trick or Treating This Weekend in Barnegat

A mysterious plague is spreading across New Jersey, causing the dead to rise and feed on the living.

In the next few days, some of these "undead" are being called to meet at the Joseph A. Citta Scout Camp, on Brookville Road in Barnegat.

On Friday, Oct. 12 from 3 p.m. to midnight and Saturday, Oct. 13, 11 a.m. to midnight, the Joseph A. Citta Scout Camp will host a Zombie Outbreak, a Pumpkin Street Safe Trick or Treat, a Ghost Manor Hayride and a Midnight Ghost Tour.

A $10 admission offers full access to all attractions plus unlimited reentry for one night. 

All of the proceeds for the Citta event will benefit Rotary International program such as Polio Plus and Shelter Box, as well as other local groups. 

One of the event coordinators, Jack Gamble, said the event at the camp was an extension of a house display he did at his Manahawkin home every year. 

"It started out with fog machines and black lights, then we started expanding and added a graveyard, and a free standing maze," Gamble said. "People started asking 'what do you charge for trick or treaters,' and we didn't charge anything, so we figured, why not reach out and make it a charitable event."

A self-described "Halloween enthusiast," Gamble said he has attended the New Jersey Zombie Walk in Asbury Park in the past, and is excited to be part of a zombie event in Southern Ocean County.

Gamble said so far, about 3,000 tickets have been sold, and he is hoping for another 3,000 in walk in attendees.
