'Unfounded' Shooter Reported At Barnegat High School: Police

All district schools were locked down as a precautionary measure Friday morning, police said. There is no indication that anything happened.

BARNEGAT, NJ — All district schools were placed in shelter-in-place Friday morning as Barnegat police responded to "unfounded" reports of a shooter, police said.

"Officers were quickly on scene and in the building and have found no indications or reports of anything occurring," police said. Police say they believe it to be a "swatting" incident.

Bengal Boulevard will continue to be closed as police continue to make sure the school is safe, police said.

BHS students are being evacuated and taken to the Collins School to be reunited with their parents as police do a secondary search of the building.

"Again, we have significant resources on scene to ensure the safety of the kids and staff at BHS and there are no indications that anything has occurred," police said.

Stafford Township schools also went into a districtwide shelter-in-place due to the reported threats in Barnegat and Toms River.

"They believe it’s a hoax; however, we are unsure at this time," the district tweeted. The lockdown was lifted shortly before 12 p.m. Friday as the district confirmed it to be a hoax.
