Varicose Veins: Treat Now for a Healthier Summer

A local expert will discuss varicose veins -- and the fact that winter is the best time to treat them -- during a free workshop on Jan. 28

People with varicose veins often avoid wearing shorts and bathing suits. But winter is the ideal time to address the condition, so legs look and feel their best by summer.

A medical expert will discuss this and other facts about varicose veins at a free presentation in Manahawkin. Jeffrey Hager, DO, FACOS, will speak on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Meridian Fitness and Wellness. The facility is located at 700 South Main Street, West Creek, NJ 08092.

Dr. Hager’s talk will include how to know if you need treatment, and the latest non-surgical techniques -- which are often pain-free, require little recovery time and are covered by many health insurance plans.

“The colder months are best for treatment,” notes Dr. Hager, a board-certified vascular surgeon with more than 25 years of experience. “It takes up to three months for the veins to shrink all the way down, so February to April is a good time to get started – well before shorts season.”

A true medical problem, varicose veins worsen if left untreated. They become more painful, swollen, and eventually damage the skin. Plus, their appearance can make people feel self-conscious and avoid healthy outdoor activities.

Dr. Hager heads Advocare Hager Advanced Vein Care in Manahawkin, a leader in the evaluation and comprehensive treatment of venous and arterial diseases since 1993. Dedicated to providing an outstanding patient experience, the practice features a caring, friendly staff and a no-wait policy in the waiting room.

Dr. Hager’s presentation is sponsored by the Care To Be Aware Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public about important health issues.

March 18 Seminar on Dangerous Blood Clots: Deep Vein Thrombosis

Dr. Hager will also speak about deep vein thrombosis (DVT) on March 18 at 2 p.m. at the same location (Meridian Fitness and Wellness in Manahawkin).

DVT is a blood clot deep within the body, usually in a leg vein. The clot can break off and travel to the brain, lungs, heart or other area, causing severe damage. The good news: DVT is preventable and treatable.

Dr. Hager will discuss the risk factors for DVT, the importance of early detection, treatment and prevention.

“DVT has many risk factors, including obesity, long periods of inactivity, pregnancy, smoking, and use of birth control pills or other hormones,” says Dr. Hager. “Lowering your risk and identifying DVT early can help prevent life-threatening complications.”
