WATCH: Months After Severe Injuries, Retired LBI Cop Heads Home

MANAHAWKIN, NJ — Scott Barr received a hero's welcome once he left the rehabilitation center. The retired Ship Bottom police sergeant was struck Oct. 12 by an oncoming vehicle.

Barr stopped to help someone at the scene of a crash on the Garden State Parkway. While he tried to assist, an oncoming vehicle hit him. The retired police officer has since undergone many procedures and surgeries.

He spent 139 days in hospitals and rehabilitation centers. He finally returned home to his family. Two lines of officers gave Barr salutes and a standing ovation as he left the Bacharach Institute of Rehabilitation.

Officers from Long Beach Island, Stafford, Barnegat, Ocean Township, Little Egg Harbor, Lacey and State Police honored Barr outside.

Barr's family has posted updates about his recovery on a GoFundMe page. Barr was fitted for and received his first prosthetic leg, his family posted Feb. 16. He was able to stand, balance and take a few steps.

The State Police hockey team will hold a fundraiser for Barr. The New Jersey Police Benevolent Association Hockey Team will face the Atlantic City Guns n' Hoses.
