Some Barnegat area motorists are seeing a little relief at the pump, even as prices stay in limbo. Is this good news? Well, sort of. We may have peaked, but we’re not out of the woods yet.
Some fuel experts are predicting this may be the summer’s pricing trend. In other words, prices may not drop to last year’s, but they also probably will not increase at the rates observed in the last several months. The national average for Friday, May 13, according to AAA, is $3.98 (no change from last week) for regular, $4.12 (no change) for midgrade and dropping to $4.24 (from $4.25) for premium.
Locally, Barnegat residents are slowly inching toward national averages but not quite there yet. New Jersey State averages are at $3.89 for regular, according to AAA; Barnegat Area averages are pretty much on par with the surrounding state. Next week will be telling for what the summer will bring.

This week’s gas-saving tip is to assess your lawn cutting equipment and consider switching over to electric power tools. With summer around the corner, lawn mowers and weed-whackers will be in full use – and of course, that means more gas used. Picking up an electric mower and other rechargeable battery-operated equipment will save the average homeowner one to two gallons a week in gas. Other benefits are that they are quieter, less harmful to the environment and cheaper in total cost to that of gas operated lawn equipment.

If you’re buying gas in Barnegat this weekend, expect to pay an average of around $3.88 for regular and $4.12 for premium – a little cheaper than last week. The best price in Barnegat can be found at the Bay Avenue Wawa with regular at $3.85; The Bay Avenue Lukoil is its usual high this week at $3.91 for regular. Riggins on Main Street is somewhere in the middle with regular at $3.89.
If you’re in the Lacey/Forked River expect to pay around $3.87 for regular, around the same as Barnegat, but a little higher than Manahawkin. The Garden State Service Center has caught up to the rest of area stations, with regular at $3.88 per gallon. The Manahawkin area is averaging a little below the Barnegat/Waretown/Lacey area at $3.86 for regular, if you’re down shopping or heading to the island it’s a good chance to gas up for the coming week.
