Woman, Boy Injured When Car Strikes Pole In Manahawkin

Seven-year-old boy flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, police say.

A seven-year-old Barnegat boy had to be flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center Monday after the driver of a vehicle he was riding in struck a utility police on Route 9 in Manahawkin, Capt. Thomas Dellane said.

Stafford police responded to the scene at 4:05 p.m. on April 25 on a report of a vehicle that hit a utility pole. Shannon M. Hartman, 30, Barnegat, was traveling north on Route 9 when she tried to negotiate a bend, lost control of her vehicle, then struck the pole, he said.

The boy, who was in the front passenger seat, suffered internal and back injuries. Hartman sustained internal injuries and was taken to Southern Ocean Medical Center for treatment, Dellane said.

Traffic on Route 9 was stopped in both directions for approximately 45 minutes

Officer Allen Jillson is the investigating officer. The Stafford Township Volunteer Fire Company and the Stafford Township Volunteer EMS, also assisted.

Ms. Hartman received a summons for careless driving and not properly restraining the boy. This matter is pending a future court date in Stafford Township Municipal Court.
