$550K Awarded To 2 Somerset County Towns To Improve Pedestrian Safety

Somerville and Bernardsville were among 45 New Jersey towns to receive a grant due to an increase in the state's 2023 budget.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — Bernardsville and Somerville were among 45 New Jersey towns to receive grants to improve pedestrian and bike safety in their towns.

Governor Phil Murphy announced Monday that more than $24 million in grants was awarded. The grants are split between three programs including:

  • $13.4 million for the Safe Streets to Transit Program to improve access to transit facilities and public transportation in counties and municipalities
  • $8.4 million for the Local Bikeway Program to promote bicycling as an alternate mode of transportation
  • $2.9 million for the Transit Village Program to be utilized toward the revitalization and redevelopment of areas around transit facilities into mixed-use neighborhoods

Bernardsville was awarded $250,000 and Somerville $299,000 under the Safe Streets to Transit Program.

The funding was available after the Local Aid and Economic Development Grants line item increased by nearly 50 percent in the Fiscal Year 2023 budget over the last fiscal year.

"In order to maximize the impact of our considerable public transportation upgrades, we must ensure that our transit facilities are linked not just to economically thriving neighborhoods, but to streets that bring our community members to their destination reliably and efficiently," said Murphy. "For many New Jerseyans, commutes or daily travels do not begin and end at the train station. That’s why my Administration is doubling down on its efforts to promote active transportation alternatives and ensure that – whether you’re a pedestrian or cyclist – you can safely and affordably access our nation-leading public transportation network."
