Basking Ridge Teen Assaults Officer After Being Banned From Prom: Police

The teen along with four other students had been drinking before coming to prom, police report

Basking Ridge, NJ -- A Basking Ridge teen assaulted a police officer after being told he could not enter his own prom because he had been drinking, Hanover Police Captain Shawn Waldron said.

Hanover Police Detective Sal Siino was working a security detail at the Birchwood Manor for the Ridge High School prom on Friday, May 20 at 9:16 p.m. when school officials told him about five students who had been drinking before coming to prom.

The students were banned from entering prom and their parents were called to pick them up.

One of the students, Mohamed Shata, 18, of Basking Ridge became "irate" about the situation and did not listen to school officials or police, according to police.

Refusing to listen, Shata began to struggle with police and attempted to kick Det. Siino, Waldron said.

Shata was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
