Bernards Township Celebrates America 250! Who was Annis Boudinot Stockton? Mrs. Stockton was the wife and mother-in-law of two Signers of the Declaration of Independence but she was a patriot in her own right who gained renown as a prolific, patriotic poet. Join Alisa Dupuy for a theatrical performance describing Annis’ life. Her prominent family in Princeton gave her social stature. Historians trace her first poem to 1753, shortly before she wed attorney Richard Stockton, namesake of Stockton University. Richard’s decision to oppose the British led to his capture, which inspired Annis to produce passionate, pro-independence poetry
and to raise funds for the Continental Army.
Presenter: Alisa Dupuy, a former educator, is the owner of Ladies of History dedicated to making history fun, exciting and memorable, in addition to highlighting the contributions that women have made to history.
