Car Burglaries, Thefts On The Rise In Basking Ridge

Bernards Township Police remind residents, "PLEASE DO NOT leave your vehicle unlocked with the keys in it!"

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — There has been an increase in motor vehicle burglaries and vehicle thefts in recent weeks, according to the Bernards Township Police Department.

"These crimes have been occurring in this township, surrounding towns, Somerset County and Northern New Jersey. "We ask that all residents make it difficult for these criminals to commit these crimes. PLEASE DO NOT leave your vehicle unlocked with the keys in it!"

Police offered the following steps to help prevent becoming a victim:

  • Do not leave valuables in plain view (purses, wallets, GPS devices, lap tops, PDA’s, cell phones, MP3’s);
  • Do not leave windows or sunroof open;
  • Do not leave doors unlocked;
  • Do not leave keys or key fobs in the vehicle;
  • Do not leave the garage door opener in plain view;
  • Do not leave out items with personal information;
  • Do not move valuable items to the trunk while in public view.

The Bernards Township Police are also asking all residents to report any suspicious persons, vehicles or activity you see in your neighborhoods. Contact the police at (908) 766-1122.
