Environmental Education Center Programs

July 16 to 22, 2018

The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center at 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge has scheduled the following Naturalist-led programs to help children and adults enjoy the wonders of nature in Somerset County. The Environmental Education Center provides many entertaining and educational programs for children and adults year around.

Pre-registration is required for programs and may be done by calling 908-722-1200, ext. 5002. or NJ Relay at 711 for individuals with a hearing or speech impairment. Registration is available online at www.somersetcountyparks.org

CHILDREN/TEEN PROGRAMS

Xtreme Adventure - Kayak

Wednesday, July 18 from 8:30 A.M. to 7:30 P.M.

Adventurers age 13 to 16 will travel to the Wading River in the Pine

Barrens and learn how to wet exit a kayak. And learn proper

paddle skills.

Fee is $75 per person.

Dinosaur Daze

Thursday, July 19 from 3:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.

Children ages 4 to 6 will learn all about dinosaurs through games and

activities.

ADULT/FAMILY PROGRAMS

What’SUP (Stand Up Paddling – NEW!

Monday, July 16 from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.

Adults will join a professional at Spruce Run Reservoir for a lesson and

guided excursion.

Fee is $120 per person.

Whitewater Beginnings

Friday, July 20 from 7:30 A.M. to 8:30 P.M.

Kayakers age 15 and over will have an opportunity to take their skills to

another level on a trip to Class 1-11 whitewater at the Lackawaxen

River. Prior participation in at least two, 4-miles or less river trips

required.

Fee is $75 per person.

Lovable Lepidoptera – NEW PROGRAM!

Friday, July 20 from 10:00 P.M. from 12:00 Midnight

Family and friends age 8 and older with a parent will join a Naturalist for

a late evening adventure at the EEC to learn about moths and other

nocturnal insects

Fee is $14 per adult and $12 per student or senior.

Raindrops to Rainbows

Sunday, July 22 from 2:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.

Family and Friends of all ages will learn how, when, and why rainbows form, experimenting with the color spectrum and prisms.

“The Great Swamp Experience,” on the lower level at the EEC, features interactive displays, vignettes, taxidermy, and archeological artifacts highlighting the history and ecology of the Great Swamp. The exhibit is open 7 days a week from 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission Is free. Please note that dog walking is not permitted on the trails at the Environmental Education Center.
