Environmental Education Center Programs

September 3 to 9, 2018

The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center at 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge has scheduled the following Naturalist-led programs to help children and adults enjoy the wonders of nature in Somerset County. The Environmental Education Center provides many entertaining and educational programs for children and adults year around.

Pre-registration is required for programs and may be done by calling 908-722-1200, ext. 5002. or NJ Relay at 711 for individuals with a hearing or speech impairment. Registration is available online at www.somersetcountyparks.org

CHILD/PARENT PROGRAMS

Fossil Hunt – New Jersey

Friday, September 7 from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.

Family and friends age 12 and older with a parent will join a Naturalist on

a day trip to collect Late Cretaceous Era fossils including

brachipods, sponges, shark teeth, and more, all found in and

around shallow bodies of water.

Fee is $40 per adult and $35 per student or senior.

Fall Frolic – NEW PROGRAM!

Friday, September 7 from 10:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M.

Children age infant to 5 with a parent will join a naturalist for early fall

fun including a hike, a fall themed craft and some autumn stories.

Fee is $10 per pair and $5 per additional child.

ADULT/FAMILY PROGRAMS

Forest Fitness Tuesdays

Tuesdays, September 4, 11, 18, and 25 from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M.

Adults are invited to join a Naturalist-led weekly walking group, enjoying

nature along the level trails of Lord Stirling Park.

Fee is $20 for the 4-day program.

Bird Walks

Saturday, September 8 from 7:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M.

Adults will join a Naturalist on a stroll around the grounds of the EEC

seeking out the many migrant birds that pass through the area.

The walk is free and registration is not required.

Owl Prowl

Saturday, September 8 from 8:00 P.M. to 10:30 P.M.

Family and friends 8 years of age and older will join a Naturalist to

explore the nocturnal world of the owl; long & short-eared, barred

or great horned, on a hike through Lord Stirling Park.

Fee is $18 per adult and $15 per student or senior.

Family Nature Walk – FREE PROGRAM

Sunday, September 9 from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 P.M.

Family and friends will enjoy a Naturalist-led interpretive walk

through the Great Swamp.

The program is free and pre-registration is not required.

“The Great Swamp Experience,” on the lower level at the EEC, features interactive displays, vignettes, taxidermy, and archeological artifacts highlighting the history and ecology of the Great Swamp. The exhibit is open 7 days a week from 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission Is free. Please note that dog walking is not permitted on the trails at the Environmental Education Center.
