Environmental Education Center Programs

October 8 to October 14, 2018

The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center at 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge has scheduled the following Naturalist-led programs to help children and adults enjoy the wonders of nature in Somerset County. The Environmental Education Center provides many entertaining and educational programs for children and adults year around.

Garden Discovery Tour – Grounds for Sculpture

Thursday, October 11 from 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.

Adults will enjoy a day-trip to the 35-acre magnificently landscaped

garden featuring over 250 contemporary sculptures.

Fee is $60 per adult and $50 per senior.

By the Light of the Moon

Friday, October 12 from 6:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M.

Led by a Naturalist, adventurers of all ages will explore the Great Swamp,

listening for animal sounds in the night while walking the swampy

trails beneath the stars. Walks will depart every 15 minutes

with concurrent indoor activities including live critters,

refreshments and more. (Rain date October 13.)

Bird Walks

Saturday, October 13 from 7:30 A.M. to 9:30 A.M.

Adults will join a Naturalist on a stroll around the grounds of the EEC

seeking out the many migrant birds that pass through the area.

The walk is free and registration is not required.

Birding Identification Workshops – Sparrows

Saturday, October 13 from 9:45 A.M. to 10:45 A.M.

Adults will enjoy an opportunity to begin, refine, or reinforce birding

skills in this year-long series of workshops focused on tips and

tricks to identify various bird species. This program will address

sparrows with mid-October the prime time to find these birds in

Lord Stirling Park.

Tree Identification Workshop – NEW PROGRAM!

Saturday, October 13 from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon

Adults will join a Naturalist to learn identification methods while

exploring the diversity of trees that live in the Great Swamp.

Forest Fitness Sundays

Sundays, October 14, 21, and 28 from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M.

Adults are invited to join a weekly walking group, enjoying nature along

the level trails of Lord Stirling Park.

Fee is $15 for the 3-day program.

Family Nature Walk – FREE PROGRAM

Sunday, October 14 from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 P.M.

Family and friends will enjoy a Naturalist-led interpretive walk

through the Great Swamp.

The program is free and pre-registration is not required.

Live Animal Show

Sunday, October 14 from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M.

Family and friends of all ages are invited to join the Eyes of the Wild live

presentation of some of nature’s coolest creatures.

Pre-registration is not required. Suggested donation $5 per person.

“The Great Swamp Experience,” on the lower level at the EEC, features interactive displays, vignettes, taxidermy, and archeological artifacts highlighting the history and ecology of the Great Swamp. The exhibit is open 7 days a week from 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Admission Is free. Please note that dog walking is not permitted on the trails at the Environmental Education Center.
