Nature walks for all ages at the EEC
Nature walks for all ages at the EEC (Somerset County Park Commission)

The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center at 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge has scheduled the following Naturalist-led programs to help children and adults enjoy the wonders of nature in Somerset County. The Environmental Education Center provides many entertaining and educational programs for children and adults year around.

Pre-registration is required for programs and may be done by calling 908-722-1200, ext. 5002. or NJ Relay at 711 for individuals with a hearing or speech impairment. Registration is available online at www.somersetcountyparks.org.

Tot Trek - FREE PROGRAM

Friday, September 27 from 10:30 A.M. to 11:30 A.M.

Children age infant to 5 with a parent will leave their strollers behind for a

leisurely walk along the trails of Lord Stirling Park to enjoy the

natural beauty of spring in New Jersey.

Saturday, September 28 from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M.

Children ages 12 to 15 - Is natural science a subject you find interesting?

Do you like the outdoors? Is the Great Swamp a place you like to

visit? If so, join the Environmental Education Center Naturalists

and contribute your talents to fun and educational projects and

special events.

ADULT/FAMILY PROGRAMS

Recipe for a Reptile – NEW! – FREE PROGRAM

Sunday, September 22 from 2:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M.

Family and friends of all ages will join the Naturalists to meet some live reptiles including snakes and geckos, discovering what it takes to be a reptile.

The program is free.

Birds of the World – NEW! – FREE PROGRAM

Friday, September 27 from7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

Family and friends age 10 and older with a parent will join Naturalists for

a series of programs to learn about the more than 10,000 species of

birds on the planet. Lectures will address a few families at a time

and review the life history, ranges, descriptions and interesting

facts.

The program is free.

Bird Walks

Saturday, September 28 from 7:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M.

Adults will join a Naturalist on a stroll around the grounds of the EEC

seeking out the many migrant birds that pass through the area.

The walk is free and registration is not required.

A Kaleidoscope of Images from Around the World – FREE PROGRAM

Sunday, September 29 from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M.

Adults will enjoy a journey through Iceland, Nova Scotia, Acadia National

Park, Portsmith, New Hampshire, the African continent, and the

Great Swamp National Refuge through the lens of photographer

David Surks of Creative Eyes Photography.

“The Great Swamp Experience,” on the lower level at the EEC, features interactive displays, vignettes, taxidermy, and archeological artifacts highlighting the history and ecology of the Great Swamp. The exhibit is open 7 days a week from 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission Is free.

Please note that dog walking is not permitted on the trails at the Environmental Education Center.
