The husband who saw his wife get hit is seeking $5 million for severe mental and emotional trauma, and loss of companionship and consortium.
BASKING RIDGE, NJ — The husband of a Basking Ridge woman who was fatally hit by a car while crossing in a crosswalk on Halloween night is threatening to file a lawsuit against Bernards Township.
Murugappa Ganesan, husband of 42-year-old Nachammai Subramanian(Bhuvana Mani), filed two Tort Claim Notices against the Township. One notice is filed by Ganesan as the administrator of Subramanian's estate, and the second notice is filed individually.
On Oct. 31, just before 8:30 p.m., "Nachammai Subramanian was legally crossing a crosswalk on Allen Road near its intersection with Vanderveer Drive when she was struck by a motor vehicle that did not stop for the crosswalk as a result of the area failing to have proper lighting/negligently designed crosswalk," according to the notice.

The notice names the 61-year-old Bedminster Township driver of the 2025 Toyota RAV4 involved in the crash, along with Bernards Township, Somerset County, and the State of New Jersey.
As a result of Subramanian's death, her family, which includes Ganesan and their two children, ages 16 and nine, had to pay $6,300 in funeral costs.
The upcoming lawsuit will seek to get $5 million for severe mental and emotional trauma, loss of companionship, and loss of consortium, according to the notice.
At the Jan. 13 Township Committee meeting, Attorney John Belardo mentioned the notices and advised that the Board no longer comment on anything related to the Allen Road crash.
