Police To Host Personal Safety Program For High School Seniors

Covered topics will include victimization, predators, situational awareness, personal safety tips, identifying potential safety issues.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — A “Personal Safety for High School Seniors" community program will be held to prepare Somerset County graduates for their new adventures.

Hosted by the Somerset County Police Academy, this three-hour program will be offered on two different dates. First on Monday, April 23 and again on Thursday, May 31. Each class session will be limited to 50 participants. Participants may signup for one class only.

Each session will commence at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Somerset County Public Safety Center (Police Academy section) located at 402 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough Township.

Participants should dress in loose, comfortable clothing since the program will be both informative and interactive. It is also recommended that all attendees bring something to write on/with and a bottle of water or other favorite hydrating beverage.

Covered topics will include victimization, predators, situational awareness, personal safety tips, identifying potential safety issues, dealing with a physical confrontation, being a good witness, and basic unarmed defense techniques.

It is the intended goal of this program to prepare graduating seniors with an additional life skill set, namely, the ability to identify potential real-world safety concerns and to provide suggestions and training on how to respond to those situations.

The Police Academy is operated by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office in cooperation with the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office and the Somerset County Association of Chiefs of Police.

Each one-night session is free. Pre-registration for Monday, April 23, 2018, is required by Friday, April 20 and pre-registration for Thursday, May 31, is required by Friday, May 25. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend.

Additionally, the Somerset County Association of Chiefs of Police is sponsoring its annual free five-day Police Youth Week program from July 16 to 20. This program for Somerset County high school students is also coordinated by the Somerset County Police Academy.
