Alligator Seen in New Jersey Duck Pond

It may be the last place where you'd find an animal that normally lurks in Florida waters.

SECAUCUS - It may be the last place where you'd find an animal that normally lurks in Florida waters. A sign has been posted so people will discover that it's true.

An alligator was found in the "swamps of Jersey," in an area known for ducks and industry.

A Secaucus DPW employee discovered an alligator while was cleaning around a pond that's normally inhabited by ducks, Business Administrator Gary Jeffas told nj.com. The animal was found near Metro Way on May 3 preparing while the employee was preparing for the town's annual fishing derby when he reported seeing an alligator.

Mayor Michael Gonnelli and others told nj.com that the alligator was estimated at roughly 2-and-a-half feet, and a search was conducted, but nobody could find it. The DPW employee tried to take a photo of the animal, according to the report, but it quickly disappeared underwater.

The state Department of Environmental Protection reported that the animal would likely not survive long in the cold water.

Secaucus officials told News12 that they think that the alligator may have been someone’s pet and was dumped into the pond by the owner.
