Nutley Has New Date For Postponed Fireworks Show After Holiday Rainout

The town was set to celebrate Independence Day weekend with a fireworks show – but a huge storm had other plans.

NUTLEY, NJ — The show will go on in Nutley.

The township has announced a new date for its postponed 2026 Independence Day fireworks show: Saturday, Sept. 19.

The event will kick off with activities, music and food vendors at 6 p.m. at the Nutley Park Oval. A fireworks display is scheduled to begin at dusk.

Franklin Avenue will be closed from Chestnut Street to Church Street. Closures will begin at 3:30 p.m. and will not reopen until cleanup is finished.

In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held on the next clear night. For more information, call the Department of Public Affairs and Health at 973-284-4976.

The township initially planned to celebrate the United States' 250th anniversary with a public fireworks show on July 3. Those plans got derailed when a severe storm hit Nutley and other towns across New Jersey over the holiday weekend.

Now, the festivities will coincide with another worthy milepost: the Township's Constitution Day festivities.

"It may be a few weeks delayed, but Nutley will still be the destination to celebrate our nation's historic 250th birthday," Mayor John Kelly III said.

"We are looking forward to continuing our time-honored tradition of celebrating our nation's birth with family-friendly entertainment, food, and of course, fireworks… just a little later this year," Kelly said.

Nutley isn't the only Essex County town that rescheduled its Independence Day fireworks this year due to the storm. Nearby in Belleville, the town's mayor recently announced that a new date has been set for their fireworks show: Thursday, Aug. 27.
