Belleville School Board Swears In 3 New Trustees, Chooses New President And VP
Three members of the board of education were sworn in – including the first Latina LGBTQ woman elected in Belleville.

BELLEVILLE, NJ — Three members of the Belleville Board of Education were sworn in this week after their victories in the 2025 election. A new president and vice president were also elected.
Cristina Garro, Yadira Muñoz and Kenia Santana joined the dais as trustees at the school board meeting on Monday.
Former U.S. Rep. Tom Malinowski swore in Garro, while Belleville Mayor Michael Melham swore in Muñoz and Santana.

“This responsibility means a great deal to me, and I am committed to serving with integrity, dedication and heart,” said Garro, who added that she is “incredibly proud” to be the first Latina LGBTQ woman elected in Belleville.
Muñoz and Santana also credited their supporters for showing up at the polls in November, with Muñoz thanking her husband and children, and Santana mentioning “all the sacrifices” that her own family made during her campaign.

NEW PRESIDENT, VICE PRESIDENT
The board voted for Esteban Leon as their new president at Monday’s meeting, and voted for Lissa Missaggia as vice president.
“I would like to thank my fellow board members for the trust and confidence you have placed in me,” Leon said. “I take this responsibility seriously and am committed to serving with integrity, collaboration, and a strong focus on our students, staff and community.”
