Belleville Schools Closed Monday, Massive Warehouse Fire Saps Town Resources
Crews were still fighting the fire late Sunday evening, and a state of emergency was declared in the township.
BELLEVILLE, NJ – Belleville schools will be closed on Monday due to a townwide impact from a massive fire on Sunday.
The blaze began on Cortlandt Street in the industrial warehouse area, and caused additional fires several blocks away. Crews were still fighting the fire late Sunday evening, and a state of emergency was declared in the township. Town hall and police department lost power, and 911 calls were handled by Nutley.
All public schools will be closed on Monday due to the “ongoing fire in our community and its effect on local services,” School superintendent Erick Alfonso announced.

“We will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates,” the superintendent added.
