Dirt Bike Rider Crashes During Nutley Cop Chase, Hits Ground Hard: Police

The 21-year-old Clifton man allegedly tried to drive into oncoming traffic in his bid to escape the cops, Nutley police say.

Nutley, NJ – A dirt bike rider was ejected off his vehicle after he crashed while allegedly trying to elude Nutley police last week.

According to the Nutley Police Department, an officer attempted to stop a man travelling at “excessive speeds” on a dirt bike on River Road on Feb. 7.

The motorcyclist – later identified as Kevin Lopez, 21, of Clifton – allegedly crossed over the yellow divider line and attempted to pass a vehicle on the left side against oncoming traffic, police said.

At that point, Lopez crashed into a vehicle and was thrown from his bike onto the ground, landing several feet away, police stated.

Emergency responders arrived on the scene and rendered medical aid to Lopez, stabilizing him and transporting him to a local trauma center.

Following a subsequent investigation, authorities charged Lopez with eluding in the 2nd degree, reckless driving, unsafe vehicle, unregistered MV, uninsured MV, improper display plates, unsafe operation of ATV on a public roadway, failure to stop for an emergency vehicle and speeding. Lopez also had a warrant out of Newark.
