Essex County Sheriff Swears in Ten New Officers

Ceremony Held a Few Days Ago

Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura swore in 10 new officers Friday during a small ceremony at Veterans Courthouse in Newark.

Eight of the 10 new sheriff's officers had been laid off from the Newark Police Department in November when the city let go 167 officers.

"These officers are fully trained and they have already gained invaluable experience in patrol and other police operations," said Fontoura. "We welcome them to our ranks and we are confident that they will be an important asset to our department and for our community."
