Fake $100 Bill, Multiple Fraud Cases Reported In Nutley Last Week: PD

NUTLEY, NJ — Multiple cases of fraud and theft were reported in Nutley last week, including an incident at the Nutley Diner, police announced Monday.

According to the Nutley Police Department, the following incidents recently took place in the township.

July 31 – (Centre Street) Police responded to the Nutley Diner after getting a report about a suspicious incident. The manager said a man bought four cookies and paid with a $100 bill, which was later found to be counterfeit. The cashier gave the man $85.61 in change before realizing it was fake. When the cashier asked the man to return the change, he ran out of the diner and got into a Mercedes Benz. After investigating the theft, Nutley detectives identified a 21-year-old Bloomfield resident as the suspect, and charged him with forgery and theft by deception, authorities said.

Aug. 3 – A victim reported a case of fraud to police headquarters after they got an alert about an outstanding debt from Experian. After checking into the situation, it was revealed that an account was opened with Ambit Energy in the amount of $369 that was not authorized by the victim. Experian was contacted and advised the account was not opened by the victim, and a police report requested to submit to Experian, authorities said.

Aug. 4 – A victim said their financial institution contacted them about a person attempting to withdraw $3,800 from their account using an ID with their name on it. The transaction was denied, and the victim had their account closed. There was no monetary loss. The victim was advised to monitor their accounts and to contact police headquarters if there are any additional incidents. The victim declined entry into the identity theft database, authorities said.
