NUTLEY, NJ — Home intruders nabbed two sets of keys from a house in Nutley this week, stealing a pair of cars in the process, authorities said.
According to the Nutley Police Department, the burglary took place around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday on Wilmington Drive.
The intruders made their way into the home and stole two sets of keys, then absconded with the residents’ cars. One of the residents heard a noise that alerted them to the crime, and called 911 from the second floor of the home, police said.

Police Chief Thomas Strumolo and Police Director Alphonse Petracco said the “trend” of home intruders snatching car keys is new to the township – although thefts have traditionally increased around this time of year due to residents leaving their cars running when they get coffee in the morning.

“Chief Strumolo and I implemented supplemented patrols and undercover details over two months ago and observed a significant decrease in vehicle thefts and attempts,” Petracco said, adding that the plan is to “double down on crime this year.”
Authorities urged Nutley residents to take necessary precautions such as locking their homes and vehicles, and remembering to not leave valuables or keys in plain view.
