Runners, Looking for a Race?

Several Events Scheduled in Area This Month

Looking to change up your exercise routine? How about throwing a Halloween costume over your running clothes?

The Caldwell Community Center’s inaugural 5K Halloween Run/Walk is set for Saturday, Oct. 29, at 8:30 a.m.—and costumes are encouraged.

Proceeds from the 5K will benefit the Special Olympics, Swim Inc., the Caldwell Community Center (CCC) Teen Nights, and other philanthropic endeavors of the CCC.

The course begins and ends at the community center, 1 Provost Square, Caldwell, and passes through Bloomfield Avenue and many scenic streets throughout the borough. There will be an awards ceremony at 10:15 a.m., as well as kids sprints for children under the age of 10 at 10:30 a.m. Halloween costumes are optional and a prize will be awarded for the Best Costume.

“We are hoping that a Halloween/costume theme will attract many runners and that it sets us apart from other 5Ks in the area, so that we can raise many, many dollars for these worthwhile charities,” stated Caldwell Mayor Ann Dassing in a release this week. Dassing is herself an avid runner.

The race is co-sponsored by PSE&G, Hatch Mott McDonald, Lakeland Bank, the Kiwanis Club of Caldwell-West Essex, Councilman Joseph Norton and Councilman Douglas Piazza.

The U.S. Track and Field certified course will be timed by Compuscore.com. Prizes will be given for the fastest male and female overall runners, as well as top finishers in five-year age increments. T-shirts, goody bags and food and drinks will also be available for registrants.

Race fees are $20 if received before Oct. 22 and $24 after that and on the day of the race. Registration forms are available at Caldwell Borough Hall and the Caldwell Community Center. Or you can register by credit card by calling the CCC at 973-228-POOL.

The Caldwell Community Center will kick off its annual Open House with the 5K run and is planning to have games, food, demonstrations and other specials all day.
