Text From ‘Boss’ Turned Out To Be Scam, Nutley Police Say

More cases of identity theft and fraud continue to be reported in Nutley.

NUTLEY, NJ — More cases of identity theft and fraud continue to be reported in Nutley, authorities say.

The Nutley Police Department released the following details about two recent incidents that happened in the township:

Sept. 30 (Emily Avenue) – “A victim of identity theft responded to headquarters to document the incident. They stated they received a letter regarding a new bank account that they did not open. The victim stated they contacted the bank to advise them of the incident and closed the account. They were offered the opportunity to be entered as an identity theft victim but declined at the time.”

Oct. 2 (Kingsland Street) – “A victim of fraud responded to headquarters to report the incident. They stated they received a text message from an unknown number where the party identified themselves as their boss at their new job. The victim stated the unknown party advised to purchase multiple gift cards and provide pictures of the security codes. The victim stated they grew suspicious after the unknown party requested more gift cards be purchased and reported the incident to police. The Detective Bureau was advised.”
