Weather or Not, Bucs Ready for 2011 Season

Belleville Plays Ball starting Friday

The Belleville High School crew team has already put the first oar in the water, but for the most part the rest of the Bucs sports teams will be starting this weekend.

The baseball and softball teams throw out their first pitches on Friday as the Belleville baseball squad hosts Glen Ridge while the softball team travels to Millburn.

That is, if the weather permits.

One of the jobs for Belleville athletic director Tom D'Elia is to keep his eye on the weather forecasts, more so in the spring with the main two sports (softball and baseball) playing on grass fields.

Another sport basically not affected by weather is Bucs upstart boys volleyball team that will travel to Science Park to open the season on Friday.

For all of the outdoor teams the prospects of playing are much brighter for Saturday.

The baseball team will be home against Newark East Side at noon while the softball squad travels to Westfield in Union County in an independent game at 11 a.m. The volleyball team will get another taste of the SEC as the Bucs host Montclair at 11 a.m.

The Belleville golf team will take on Newark East Side and Newark West Side at Forest Hill Golf Club for the first tee at 3:30 p.m.

Another team, boys tennis, will have its first serve of the season when it hosts Irvington on Monday at 4 p.m.

For the softball team they will travel to traditional rival Nutley on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

The last team to get going is the boys and girls track and field teams that travel to Millburn on April 7 for the first dual meet of the season (4 p.m.).

For most of the spring sports it will be the second season of the new Super Essex Conference. Bucs baseball, softball, golf and track and field are in the Liberty division.

The lone Belleville team in the top division, the American, is the boys volleyball team while the boys tennis team is in the Colonial.
