41 Have Died From Coronavirus In Berkeley: County

Berkeley has the third-highest number of reported deaths among Ocean City towns.

BERKELEY, NJ — The Ocean County Health Department has reported 41 deaths from the new coronavirus in Berkeley. The figure is the third-highest recorded total in any Ocean County town as of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The OCHD recently revealed the number of reported new-coronavirus deaths by town. State officials reported daily the number of deaths in Ocean County, but death info by town was previously undisclosed.

The municipalities with the largest numbers of reported deaths are Lakewood (50), Brick (43), Berkeley (41), Toms River (35) and Manchester (34). The OCHD has reported 381 positive cases in Berkeley as of Wednesday.

Berkeley is home to several nursing homes and a large senior population. However, the data doesn't go into further specifics about deaths in each town.

In Ocean County, people 65 and older represent 76.59 percent of deaths despite having 24.57 percent of Ocean County's reported cases. According to the data, 15.7 percent of people over 65 to test positive for the virus in Ocean County have died.

The County is awaiting guidance from the New Jersey Department of Health for the definition of "recovered" before reporting that data. Some New Jersey counties have reported the number of people cleared from quarantine, rather than considering them recovered.
