Bayville Had Highest Winds In State During Blizzard

Unofficial numbers came from from the National Weather Service.

So you think the winds were especially strong in Bayville during last weekend’s blizzard?

Well, you’re right. Bayville had the highest wind gust in the state at 72 miles per hour early on the morning of Jan. 23, according to unofficial numbers released by the National Weather service, a report on nj.com states.

“That’s pretty close to the strength of a Category 1 hurricane,” said Mitchell Gaines, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service regional office in Mount Holly.

Tuckerton came in second with a gust of 68 miles per hour. Ocean winds over Southern New Jersey reached 100 miles per hour - stronger than hurricane force.

The National Weather Service’s wind gauges are placed in weather flow stations close to land. None of them picked up readings higher than 72 miles per hour.
