Man Gets 16 Years In Prison In Berkeley-Toms River Crime Spree

BEACHWOOD, NJ — A Beachwood man was sentenced to 16 years in New Jersey State Prison for a string of robberies in 2020, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office announced Friday.

Thomas Jann, 34, was sentenced to 16 years in prison for his previous guilty pleas to two counts of first degree robbery, Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said. Jann was also sentenced to eight years for four counts of second degree robbery and four years for burglary. These sentences will be served at the same time, Billhimer said. Due to the No Early Release Act, Jann will have to serve at least 85 percent of his sentences before being considered for parole eligibility, authorities said. An investigation between Toms River, Berkeley and Beachwood police found that Jann was responsible for a string of robberies in those areas from Dec. 19, 2020 through Dec. 31, 2020.

On Dec. 19, Jann attacked a gas station attendant at a Wawa on Route 9 in Toms River and stole money from the cash register.

On Dec. 24, Jann entered Robin's Convenience Store in Beachwood and brandished what appeared to be a box cutter at the attendant before stealing money from the cash register.

On Dec. 26, Jann stole money from the cash register of the Bayville Shop Rite on Route 9 and pushed a woman as he fled the store.

Also on Dec. 26, Jann attacked the Krauzer's cashier on Hooper Avenue in Toms River and stole cigarettes.

On Dec. 30, Jann grabbed a cashier by the neck and held to his head at 7-Eleven on Route 166 in Toms River before stealing money from the cash register.

On Dec. 31, Jann threw hot coffee at the Exxon Tiger Mart attendant on Route 37 in Toms River before stealing money from the cash register.

Police also discovered that Jann broke into and stole cash from a Beachwood home on July 27, 2020.

Jann has been lodged in Ocean County Jail since January 1, 2021.

Billhimer thanked the diligent efforts of Assistant Prosecutor Victoria Veni who handled the case on behalf of the State, as well as the Toms River Township Police Department, Berkeley Township Police Department, Beachwood Police Department and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, for their collaborative efforts in connection with this investigation leading to Jann’s apprehension, guilty pleas and now his state prison sentence.
