Yacht Burns, Boat Crashes, Woman Airlifted At Active Jersey Shore

A yacht burned and sank in Wildwood, a woman was airlifted from a cruise ship off Toms River; a boat was damaged after striking a marker.

JERSEY SHORE — A chaotic 24 hours unfolded across the Jersey Shore, with three separate boat-related incidents in different locations.

On Thursday afternoon, a yacht caught fire while moored to the fuel dock at a marina in Wildwood, officials said.

The 42-foot pleasure vessel was engulfed in flames and then sank due to the amount of water used to extinguish the blaze, officials said. The fire extended to the dock itself and a shed on the dock, and then a fuel fire started on the water.

The emergency was reported to the U.S. Coast Guard at about 7:50 p.m., authorities said.

The Coast Guard Sector New York's duty flight surgeon was consulted and recommended a medical evacuation to a higher level of care, and the Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City MH-65 Dolphin aircrew launched and arrived at the ship about 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

Then at about 5 a.m. Friday, a boat struck an intercoastal water marker and was badly damaged, according to Stafford police.

The Coast Guard called Stafford police's new marine unit for assistance with the boat, which "sustained heavy damage," taking on water and injuring one person on board, police said.

The boat was safely beached on a nearby island to prevent it from sinking when police arrived, and the boaters were taken to safety and treated. Neither had life-threatening injuries.
