Central Regional Board Names Scran As Athletic Director

The head coach of the Golden Eagles' baseball team steps down from coaching to oversee all sports, according to reports.

John Scran, who has been the baseball coach at Central Regional High School for eight years, has announce he is stepping down from that position as he takes over as the school district’s athletic director, according to reports.

Scran was approved as the district’s athletic director last Thursday at the district’s Board of Education meeting. He replaces Vincent Casale, who retired as athletic director after he was suspended in February over an undisclosed personnel matter that Superintendent Triantafillos Parlapanides said did not involve students or staff.

Scran will be paid $94,980 per year, according to the meeting agenda. Casale was receiving a salary of $134,843 a year, Board Secretary Kevin O’Shea has said.

Parlapanides told NJ.com that he was pleased to have Scran, who has been a physical education teacher in the district, in administration.

“He has innovative ideas and goals not only for athletics, but for the physical education department that will benefit all the students of Central Regional,” Parlapanides said.

“I’m excited and ready to go,” Scran told NJ.com. “I’ve always wanted to be an AD. I’ve always been interested in student-athletes. My goal is to create the best opportunities available for the students and athletes at Central Regional.”

Scran told the baseball team on Tuesday that he was stepping down as head coach, according to the Shore Sports Network, to focus on his duties as athletic director.

In eight seasons as Central’s head coach, Scran compiled a record of 108-77, which included Shore Conference Class B South division championships in 2008 and 2009. During their 2009 division championship season, the Eagles went a perfect 14-0 in division play during Scran’s second season as head coach.

Among his first responsibilities will be finding a head coach for the baseball team, and one for the boys basketball team as well, as the school board accepted the resignation of coach Steve Zengel at the same meeting where it approved Scran as athletic director.
