Driver Ejected In Crash On Route 9 In Bayville: Police
The driver wasn't wearing his seatbelt when he left a parking lot and crashed into a BMW in the road, police said.
BERKELEY, NJ — A driver was ejected from his car in a two-vehicle crash Thursday night on Route 9 in Bayville, police said.
A BMW 770 was heading north on Route 9 in the area of Station Road shortly before 9 p.m. on March 23, Berkeley police said.
Vernon Halpin, 43, of Bayville, was leaving the parking lot of 661 Route 9 when his Toyota Tundra hit the BMW, police said.

The impact caused the Toyota to spin in the roadway and come to a final stop in the parking lot of the Bayville First Aid Squad, directly across Route 9, police said. It also caused the Toyota's door to open and Halpin to be ejected, police said.
The BMW's driver was uninjured and refused medical attention, police said. Halpin had a laceration to his head and complained of back pain, according to police. Bayville and Berkeley First Aid Squads responded and while Halpin's injuries were determined to be not life-threatening, he was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center as a precaution, police said.

The Toyota's passenger also suffered minor, not life-threatening injuries, and she too was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center, police said.
An investigation revealed that the crash was caused by the Toyota failing to yield to the BMW, police said. Halpin was issued summonses for an unregistered vehicle, failure to wear seatbelt and careless driving, according to police.
Route 9 was temporarily closed down for about forty minutes between Station Road and Eugene Furey Boulevard during the duration of the investigation and removal of the vehicles.
