Man Robs Berkeley Woman At ATM Machine In Toms River

The robbery occurred in the afternoon Monday; surveillance photos show the man, whom police hope the public can identify.

TOMS RIVER, NJ -- Toms River police are searching for a man who robbed a Berkeley Township woman as she used an ATM machine Monday afternoon.

Police were called to the Bank of America at 1051 Route 37 west about 4 p.m. Monday, Toms River Police Department spokesman Ralph Stocco said.

A 68-year-old Berkeley woman told police she had just entered her pin number when a man came up behind her and said, “This is a robbery, get out of the way,” Stocco said.

The man pushed past her and withdrew cash from her account and then ran off, heading south toward a wooded area, he said.

The man was described as being in his late 20s, about 5-foot-10, wearing a wool hat and a brown jacket, Stocco said. The woman was not injured during the incident and no weapon was shown, he said.

“She did the right thing by complying with the robber’s demands, and by doing so, she may have avoided injury,” Stocco said. “Most times, they don’t want to hurt you, they only want the money.”

Photos from surveillance cameras were provided to the responding officers, Sgt. Ed Mooney and Officer Brett Hansen, and anyone who believe they can identify the man is asked to call the Toms River Police Department. Detective Randy Petrick is investigating and can be reached at 732-349-0150 extension 1235.
