Man Stole Wire Cutters, Used Them To Steal GoPro Cameras: Police

The Whiting resident was charged with shoplifting, police said.

A Whiting man is facing charges of shoplifting after he took a pair of wire cutters at Kmart and used them to cut the security cables on two GoPro cameras that he then tried to take from the store, police said Wednesday.

Kristofer Coltenback, 38, of Martin Road in the Whiting section of Manchester, is charged with fourth-degree shoplifting, said Ralph Stocco, spokesman for the Toms River Police Department.

Coltenback was in the Kmart on Route 37 in Toms River on Sunday afternoon when he was confronted by loss prevention officers in the store, Stocco said.

Stocco said Coltenback had stolen a pair of wire cutters from the store, then used them to cut the cables tethering two GoPro cameras from a display counter. The loss prevention staff recovered one of the GoPros then, but Coltenback fled, Stocco said.

Coltenback was found by Toms River Officer Robert Westfall a short distance away, Stocco said, and tried to claim the GoPro camera in his pocket was his property. But the camera had a ”For Display Only” sticker on it and the wire cutters were found in Coltenback’s pocket, Stocco said.

Toms River Officer Brett Hansen also responded to the incident, Stocco said.

Coltenback’s bail was set at $2,500, Stocco said.
