Mayor's School Supplies Drive Now In Full Swing

Lots of back-to-school items needed before school starts.

Not every child's family can afford the basic school supplies needed for the upcoming school year.

So Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. is asking for donations for needy children for the fifth annual school supplies drive. New items such as pencils, pens, paper, notebooks and other school staples will be collected at each concert in the summer concert series at a designated location in Veterans Park.

Monetary donations will also be accepted in lieu of merchandise.

"In the wake of Sandy and a downturn in the economy, we anticipate the need to be greater than last year," Amato said.

Suggested items are backpacks, safety scissors, notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, colored markers, glue, glue sticks, crayons and rulers.
