Ocean County Sheriff Catches Man 'Huffing" Outside Courthouse Before Appearance

Darren Yurick - who accused Berkeley police officers last year of excessive force - was trying to get high from an aerosol can.

Ocean County Sheriff Michael G. Mastronardy thought the man outside the Ocean County Courthouse was acting strangely.

The man was wearing a hoodie sweatshirt with an object concealed in the sleeve that turned out to be an aerosol canister. The man appeared to be having trouble walking and was slurring his speech. Mastronardy called officers to the scene.

The man was Darren Yurick, Morning Glory Court, in Toms River. He told the sheriff he had an appearance in Superior Court Judge Wendel E. Daniels’ courtroom.

The canister Yurick was carrying on Oct. 9 is used to clean debris from computer keyboards and electronics. But people with substance abuse issues misuse the can in an effort to get high.

“He said he was going to see Judge Daniels,” Mastronardy said. “And I said, ‘we can arrange that.’”

Yurick is the same man who last year accused Berkeley Township police of using excessive force at police headquarters after he was arrested. The officers were later cleared of any wrongdoing.
