Pedestrian Struck, Airlifted In Berkeley: Police

The woman was walking her dog in Holiday City when Eugenio Carto drove off the road and hit her on the sidewalk, Berkeley police said.

BERKELEY, NJ — A pedestrian was critically injured last week in Berkeley when she was struck by a car while walking her dog, police said.

Police responded to the crash on Sept. 4 at 3 p.m. at the intersection of Doral Drive and Cohansey Drive in Holiday City.

Eugenio Carto, of Berkeley, was driving a 1999 Buick Sedan and went off the roadway, hit the female pedestrian on the sidewalk and struck a tree before coming to a rest, police said. The woman had been walking her dog at the time of the crash.

She suffered a life-threatening head injury and was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, police said. As of Friday evening, the woman was in critical, but stable, condition, according to police.

Carto was issued summons for careless driving and failure to maintain lane.

The crash is still under investigation by Traffic Safety Officer Brian Flanegan. Anyone with information is asked to call the Traffic Safety Bureau at 732-341-1132 x2125.
