Bernardsville: Then and Now. A Stroll Through History
A look at images of historic downtown Bernardsville from the 1870's to today in recognition of Historic Preservation Month in May.

The National Park Service has declared May as Historic Preservation Month across America, and to recognize this, Bernardsville Public Library is pleased to present a look at historic downtown Bernardsville from the 1870's to today. Come and explore this mixed media exhibit of images curated by the Bernardsville Historic Preservation Advisory Committee (HPAC) in association with the Friends of Historic Bernardsville.
Trace the history of our town through the images left behind: see horse carriages transition to Model T’s and roadsters; and blacksmith and harness shops give way to banks and gas stations. While much has changed, you'll be surprised how much of our historic past remains and charmed by the creative ways that old buildings have been adapted to modern life. Also, don’t miss exhibits in the Library foyer that look at what’s happening with historic preservation in our area, as well as give a glimpse into the storied estate of Faircourt, the location of Bernardsville Library Foundation's Homes of Distinction event this year.
Do you know that Bernardsville has a National Historic District and a number of structures on the National Register of Historic Places? What historic places matter to you and what can you do to preserve them? This exhibition will be on view April 29-May 30 in the library’s Community Room during regular library hours unless a meeting is in progress. The public is invited to a reception on Thursday, May 19 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. Bring your historic preservation questions for our dedicated group of HPAC volunteers. Founded in 2002, Bernardsville's Historic Preservation Advisory Committee is dedicated to the promotion of historic preservation through planning, outreach, conservation, education, public programs and events.
