Friday Afternoon Movie at Bernardsville Library: "My Blue Heaven"

The hilarious story of a mob witness relocated to a small town and an FBI agent who is supposed to help him keep a low profile.

Bernardsville Public Library will continue its monthly series of Friday afternoon movies on Friday, August 25 at 2:00 pm with a showing of "My Blue Heaven" (1990) starring Steve Martin and Rick Moranis. It’s the hilarious story of a mob witness who is relocated to a small town to keep him safe before testifying and an FBI agent who is supposed to help him to assimilate and keep a low profile. It doesn't quite work out that way. The screenplay was written by Nora Ephron.

The New York Times quoted Mr. Martin saying about the film, ''What I like about this script is that it's a complicated, unpredictable story and also has comedy that grows out of character. I suppose you could call this a mainstream comedy, but I think it's better than that. It has the virtues of the logical, tight, character-driven comedies of the past.''

Future films in the Friday afternoon series range from documentaries to comedies to classics and drama and will be shown on the fourth Friday of the month at 2:00 pm. They are selected for cultural enrichment and for appeal to a wide variety of tastes and interests in the community. The series is made possible by gifts to the Friends of the Bernardsville Library and is organized by a committee of Friends. Ed English, a long-time filmmaker, heads the committee. The hope is that viewers will linger after the films to discuss them. In some cases, books and other supporting materials will be recommended before the films. The next two months will feature "Paths of Glory" (1957) starring Kirk Douglas on September 22 and "Fences" (2017) starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis on October 27.
