"Gotcha!" Snapshots That Made History
NJ photojournalist Jim DelGiudice will look at photos that changed history by accident and are icons by which we remember great events.

Advertising executive and media commentator Jerry Della Femina once said, “When we close our eyes, we see pictures.” And some of the images we remember best are snapshots—moments captured on camera purely by luck.
On Thursday, July 28 at 7:00 pm at Bernardsville Public Library, New Jersey photojournalist Jim DelGiudice will look at photos that not only changed history by accident, but have become the icons by which we remember great events. Along with each image, he’ll examine its historical context—how and why the event happened—and what it was that made the photographer say…“Gotcha!” Examples range from a snapshot of Abe Lincoln’s tousled hair which helped gain him the presidency to one of Gary Hart on a yacht that lost it for him.
Jim DelGiudice has used his eyes and voice to document the New Jersey scene for more than half of his 56 years. His architectural photography for books published by Rutgers University Press twice won him the state’s Historic Preservation Award, and his plays have been produced by such venues as the Bickford Theatre and Kean University. In the millennium year, Jim was cited by both the state and county legislatures for his lifetime contribution to the arts.
