Japan and Its Prints in the 20th Century: The New Prints Movement
A comprehensive look at the Japanese "New Prints" movement in the first half of the 2oth century.

Tom Silver, a Japanese print enthusiast, will present a comprehensive look at the Japanese “New Prints” movement in the first half of the 20th century at Bernardsville Public Library on Thursday, June 1 at 7:00 pm. His talk will feature professionally photographed prints created by many of the great Japanese print artists of that era. Discussion will focus on the artists and their times, and how this new movement largely rescued the Japanese print tradition from oblivion. "We will look at stunning landscape, kabuki actor, flower and bird, and portrait prints which are exhibited only sporadically at museums with major Japanese art collections," said Mr. Silver.
Tom Silver developed an interest Japanese prints while searching for an unusual gift for his wife. That search sparked a love for Japanese art, history, and culture. Mr. Silver’s talks at libraries and other institutions showcase print masterpieces covering the 350-year history of the Japanese print genre. His current focus is Japanese prints of the 20th Century. Mr. Silver, who lives in Morristown, is a New Jersey native, with degrees from Drew University and Rutgers University.
