It will never happen in my town, my school, or my neighborhood...until it did. Last nights shooting at the Garden State Plaza Mall in Paramus proves once again that anything can happen, and it can happen anywhere. I live in a very small town in Pennsylvania that most people never heard of until a few months ago when there was a shooting at the town meeting by a disgruntled resident. I grew up pretty close to the Garden State Plaza in Paramus and remember riding my bike there when it was still a run-down outdoor mall. Looking back now I realize that life was simpler and safer in so many ways. Parents were much more relaxed about their kid's being out playing in the neighborhood. They felt safe going to the store or going to school. Everyone kept their doors unlocked at night or when they weren't home...except my house. My house was like Fort Knox. My father was a locksmith and alarm specialist that "lived and breathed security" and so I was raised with the same belief.
Your personal safety and the safety of your family has and always will be your responsibility. Training yourself and your family to think and respond like a unit has become more and more important. In Sil Jun Do we train in confronting a shooter, weapon disarms, and cover and evacuate techniques, as well as escape and evade opportunities.
As a martial arts instructor and executive protection specialist I have developed a Family Safety and Protection Program that trains the entire family as a unit. The course is five one-hour sessions that covers everything from entering and leaving the car, walking with young children, cover and evacuate, child safety, family protocols, confronting an attacker, car-jacking, weapon disarms, and store/mall safety. Get trained, stay safe.
