One Book Bernardsville: A Dramatic Reading

A dramatic reading by local actors of parts of this year's One Book Bernardsville selection, "The Canterville Ghost," by Oscar Wilde

Join us at Bernardsville Public Library on Tuesday, October 11 at 7:00 pm for a dramatic reading by local actors of selected parts of this year’s One Book Bernardsville selection, “The Canterville Ghost,” by Oscar Wilde. This short story, published in 1887, is, according to its author, “An amusing chronicle of the tribulations of the Ghost of Canterville Chase when his ancestral halls became the home of the American Minister to the Court of St. James.” It’s a whimsical tale, highlighting the culture clash between a 16th century English ghost and the “modern” American family which refuses to be afraid of him. Wilde, the Irish playwright, poet and author of numerous short stories, was one of the most successful playwrights of the late Victorian era in London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day.

Bernardsville Library invites everyone to join us in this community reading project. During October, we are celebrating ghosts all month, discussing the story, watching a movie based on it, and learning about our own local ghost, Phyllis, of the old Vealtown Tavern.

There is no charge to attend the program, but advance sign-up is requested. Register online at www.bernardsvillelibrary.org and follow the link from Adult Programs, or call the library at 908-766-0118 to sign up.
