Aljira, Center for Contemporary Art Selling Online, Benefit Auction
- Bloomfield,
NJ, April 14, 2014
Nye and Company posted an auction to www.igavelauctions.com Tuesday, April
15th lasting two weeks, until April 29th. The sale
includes a rare opportunity to support one of Newark’s cultural jewels: Aljira, a center for
contemporary art. Located downtown at 591
Broad Street, they are in the heart of the Arts
Triangle and will provide a gathering Monday, April 28th from 5-7pm.
It will be an opportunity to visit with and meet their founding director,
Victor Davson.
On the occasion of Aljira’s 30th
anniversary, they’re offering over fifty works of art at auction to further
enhance and promote this institution, which is dedicated to the advancement of
artists and their careers. The name means dreamtime, in the Australian
Aboriginal language and relates to the concepts of timelessness and
possibility, characteristics of the artistic process. Auction proceeds will
enable Aljira to continue to seek-out emerging or under-represented artists and
promote cross-cultural conversation and a better understanding of the
interesting times in which we are living.
Some works included in the auction are by Sam Gilliam,
Julien Kremier, Loretta Lux, Mickalene Thomas and many more. Various media are
present and available, as well, with lithographs, original paintings,
photographs and collages and watercolors.
In order to benefit Aljira and help them celebrate their anniversary,
opening bids for some works are extremely reasonable and may be as low as $400.
Other pieces are more expensive, but the diversity and overall quality of the
collection make this a rare opportunity to support this important institution.
In early 2010, Nye and Company relocated to Bloomfield, New Jersey making them
more easily accessible to New York City. Our location moments off major
interstate arties (Garden State Parkway, New Jersey Turnpike, Routes 80, 280, 287)
and State Routes 3, 46 and 23, is easily found by the
large-format banners on the façade.
