Apple Launches New Operating System, Updates Products

It's been rumored for weeks that Apple would be launching an upgraded line of computers to go along with the launch of its new operating system, and today those rumors became a reality with updates to the MacBook Air and Mac mini product lines.

Yesterday after announcing that the company posted its best quarter to date with $28.57 billion in revenue, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer confirmed speculation that the company would release its updated operating system today as a digital download through the Mac App Store.

Arguably the biggest addition to the Apple family, the OS X 10.7 Lion operating system, will allow many Mac users to upgrade their existing machines for only $29.99. The latest operating system is said to incorporate 250 new features, including full-screen apps and multi-touch gestures. "Lion is the best version of OS X yet, and we're thrilled that users around the world can download it starting today," said Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing Philip Schiller in a statement.

The Apple Online Store was taken offline briefly this morning so the company could update its product catalog. The new lines of MacBook Air computers feature faster Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processors (depending on model), an Apple Thunderbolt connection and a back-lit keyboard for typing in the dark. As has been the case in the past, the computer comes in two sizes; 11 and 13 inches, and has a battery life rated for 5 hours (11 inch model) and 7 hours (13 inch model).

Currently, the new MacBook Airs are showing that they are shipping in 1-3 business days with an estimated delivery between July 26-29 using free standard shipping.

Apple's entry level desktop computer, the Mac mini, also saw a substantial overhaul. "Mac mini delivers the speed and expandability that makes it perfect for the desktop, living room or office," said Schiller.

The newer models sport Intel Core i5 and Core i7 dual-core processors, a Thunderbolt connection, and range in price from $599 to $1,849 depending on configuration. One notable omission in the new models is the exclusion of an optical drive, meaning that users will have to purchase an External Superdrive if they want to play CDs or DVDs through the machine. 

In addition, the company is offering a more expensive version of the Mac mini with a price tag starting at $999. That model ships with an quad-core Intel Core i7 processor and is designed for advanced users, who intend to use the device as a server. Currently the Mac minis will ship within 24 hours and are available for delivery by the end of the week using free standard shipping.

One interesting point to note is that Apple's entry level laptop, the MacBook, has been removed from the Apple Online Store entirely. Engadget.com reports that the model has been discontinued.
