Bike Racks and Healthy Snacks: Bloomfield Health Department Launches New Initiatives
Residents and store owners can request the installation of bike racks at any public location.

As part of its mission to “prevent disease and promote physical and mental well-being,” the Bloomfield Health Department is launching two new initiatives this spring, both funded by a grant from the Partners for Health Foundation.

The municipality will be installing bike racks this spring at schools, parks, and other select areas.

“We’re doing this to promote cycling as a means of improving health,” explained Michael Hodges, a health educator with the municipality.
“Our community health assessment (CHA) indicated that residents are dealing with the burden of high blood pressure and diabetes,” Hodges stated. “Consistent, moderate exercise can lessen the burden of these diseases by improving heart health and helping to reduce body fat.”

HEALTHY CORNER STORE INITIATIVE
In addition to encouraging active transportation such as cycling, the Health Department will also be working with elementary schools and corner stores to make healthier food options more accessible to all residents.
According to a release, through a new “Healthy Corner Store Initiative,” the municipality will provide education to elementary school students to help them distinguish between healthy and unhealthy snacks, understand the benefits of eating healthy, and be less shy about trying new types of nutritious food.
The Health Department will also be working with corner stores that are frequented by students and encouraging store owners to make it their policy to offer four healthy snack options. So far, two stores have signed Memorandums of Agreement indicating their intent to participate, according to a release.
Store owners who want to participate in the program can contact the Health Department.
