The Bloomfield Bengal Track and Field team won big at the Essex County Individual Championships May 18 and 19, taking home one gold medal and seven other medals.

Junior Serhiy Kralka won first place in the shot put and fifth in the discus throw. Sophomore Tonisha Beresford continued her break out season for the Bengal track team, coming in third place with a time of :58.54 for the girls 400m run and breaking the current Bloomfield High School record.

  • The previous week, Beresford won the NJSIAA Sectional Championship in the 400 meter run. Tonisha’s time of 57.01 set a meet and school record. Other place winners for Bloomfield included-Nick Perry-3rd place long jump, 4th place high hurdles; Steve Taste-3rd place high hurdles; Jeovan Santos-5th place javelin; Serhiy Kralka-5th place discus. All advance to the Group Championship next weekend at Old Bridge High School.
  • The Bengal Baseball team advanced to the State Sectional Semi-finals with decisive wins over fourth seeded North Bergen and fifth seeded Roxbury. Mike Carter’s lead-off home run got things going against the Gaels. Andrew Coco was the winning pitcher. The team returns to action today traveling to the top seed Ridgewood for a 4 PM start.
  • Mike Carter, Christian Ferri and James Torres were selected to represent Essex County in the Union/Essex underclassman Baseball All-Star Game.
  • Baseball Head Coach Mike Policastro picked up his 100th win as Bengal Mentor and the 150th of his Coaching career in Bloomfield’s win over North Bergen.
  • The Volleyball team bested Montclair in State Tournament play before falling to #2 seed Don Bosco Prep. The team finishes with a very commendable 17-8 record.
  • The weather put the brakes on the other programs. Softball, Golf and Tennis all conclude their seasons this week.
