Bloomfield Hydrant Flush: What To Do If You Have Brown Water

The 1,200 hydrants owned and operated by the Township of Bloomfield are being flushed. Here's what to do if you have discolored water.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Bloomfield has begun flushing its hydrants as part of a regular maintenance program, town officials announced Friday.

According to a news release from Bloomfield township:

“The Bloomfield Fire Department is presently flushing hydrants throughout the township. This program typically runs from April through October so that all of the 1,200 hydrants owned and operated by the Township of Bloomfield are flushed to remove sediment build up and refresh the water circulating through the piping ... Hydrant flushing is a necessary and required procedure that all water systems must perform in accordance with NJDEP and EPA regulations.”

“If you are experiencing brown or discolored water, please run your water for several minutes until it becomes clear … Brown or discolored water complaints should be reported directly to the Bloomfield Engineering Department by calling 973-680-4009 or sent via e-mail to engineering@bloomfieldtwpnj.com. If you call and do not get an immediate response, please leave a voicemail with a contact phone number and someone will return your call. Knowing the location of a water complaint, such as discolored water, low pressure etc., as well as the number of complaints, will assist the Engineering Department in determining the nature and cause if it is something other than hydrant flushing.”
