Bloomfield Police Awards Honor High-Achieving Officers

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — It was a night for “heroism, outstanding community engagement and professional excellence” in Bloomfield.

The Bloomfield Police Department held its annual awards ceremony last week at Carteret School to honor the exceptional service and dedication of its officers.

Among the evening’s honorees were officers Nicholas Santorella and Gary Peters Jr., who received the prestigious Medal of Honor – the highest recognition of the evening – for their “acts of heroic courage in the line of duty despite imminent personal risk.”

Lt. Daniel Niekrasz was also honored with the Chief’s Award, personally selected by Bloomfield Police Chief George Ricci, for showing “exceptional dedication and commitment” on the job.

Ricci also honored the Central Communications Dispatchers, often referred to as the “unsung heroes of the department,” for their “critical behind-the-scenes role in ensuring public safety.”

A large crowd of local officials, community leaders and family members were present at the ceremony to cheer the honorees on.

“These awards are a testament to the incredible work our officers perform every day,” Ricci said. “Their efforts not only keep Bloomfield safe but also strengthen the bonds of trust and respect with our residents.”

Mayor Jenny Mundell also congratulated the officers on a job well done.

“Our police officers truly exemplify the values of service, integrity, and commitment that define our town,” the mayor said. “Their courage and dedication inspire us all, and we are fortunate to have such exceptional individuals protecting and serving Bloomfield.”

The BPD also gave a recent social media shout-out to some new officers who graduated from the Essex County Police Academy: Jeffrey Morocho, Michael Lopez, Michael DiVito and Vincent Gencarelli.
